It was Asashoryu all the way at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament, with the unbeaten yokozuna defeating ozeki Chiyotaikai to win his third straight title Sunday and claim his place as the most successful wrestler of the year for the fifth year.
Asashoryu showed why he is the lone grand champion in the sport, walking over his opponents with little effort throughout the 15-day tournament to take his 19th career Emperor's Cup.
"It's always nice to win every bout," Asashoryu said. "From the 10th day I started to feel I had a good chance to win the title and fought with the pride of a yokozuna."
On Sunday, his victim was Chiyotaikai, who goes home with a lackluster 9-6 record, good enough for him to hold onto his ozeki status but not much to brag about.
Ozeki Kaio, meanwhile, showed the hometown fans in Fukuoka why he is still in the ring. Although he went into the basho on the verge of demotion for having put in a losing effort the last time out, he was in contention for the title well into the second week. The 34-year-old veteran closed on a loss, however, allowing sekiwake Miyabiyama to thrust him out.
Kaio goes home with a 10-5 record, one of his best recently, and for once won't be on the brink of losing his rank. Miyabiyama, himself a former ozeki, narrowly managed to place himself among the winners with an 8-7 record.
The other ozeki also fared well.
