A gala exhibition closed out the World Figure Skating Championships on Sunday at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, bringing down the curtain on what turned out to be a stellar week for Asian skaters, and host Japan in particular.
Miki Ando's emotional come-from-behind gold-medal performance in the women's event Saturday evening capped a week that saw local skaters claim half the singles medals on offer, with Mao Asada moving up from fifth place after the short program to take silver.
On Thursday, national champion Daisuke Takahashi earned a silver medal in the men's event, the best result a Japanese man has ever achieved at the World Championships.Frenchman Brian Joubert, the European champion skated to the men's gold with two-time world champion Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland third.
"Before, Europeans and Americans were dominant in figure skating," Ando said after picking up her medal."Now, Asians are on equal footing and I'm happy about that."
