HINT:先日、国内初の「完全24時間空港」となった関西国際空港。さてその理由は・・・・・・?
OSAKA――Kansai International Airport opened its second runway Thursday after racking up 903.6 billion yen in costs and deciding to do without a terminal building.
The addition of Runway B, 13 years after the offshore airport began operating in southern Osaka Prefecture, means the airport can operate flights around the clock, the nation's first to do so.
At 4,000 meters, Runway B is Japan's longest, about the same length as Narita International Airport's Runway A. Also built on reclaimed land in Osaka Bay, Runway B is 500 meters longer than Runway A.
That means the new runway will be used only for landings for the time being. Arriving aircraft will taxi to the existing terminal.
Kansai International Airport Co. plans to step up efforts to expand its flights, particularly to destinations around Asia. Runway B was initially slated to open in October, but it was rushed into service two months earlier for a major track and field competition in Osaka. The 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics begins Aug. 25.
