NARASHINO, Chiba Prefecture――Athens gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima cruised to a gold medal Tuesday in the men's 100-meter breaststroke in the International Swim Meet 2007 at the Chiba swimming center.
“I'm relieved that I won,” said Kitajima, who finished in a time of 59.75 seconds despite a nagging thigh injury. “I was worried about my injury, but I was able to give 100 percent.”
In the men's 400-meter relay, Japan set a national record of 3 minutes, 18.38 seconds but finished in second place behind Australia.
Ryuichi Shibata also finished second in men's 200-meter butterfly behind Poland's Pawel Korzeniowski while Ai Shibata was fourth in the women's 400-meter freestyle.
Nanaka Tamura also was fourth in 100-meter breaststroke.
